The short movie 'DEVAKI' an endless journey has been released on YouTube. The story of the movie is based on the love story between a girl and a Boy. The girl has no right to fall in love or to marry a guy she loves, and a boy, who wants to run away from the social life and wants to create his own little world for the girl he loves.

The lead role of the movie Devaki is been portrayed by Chandani Shrestha whereas Suraj Bista is the male actor in lead. Likewise, Bijita Chaulagain, Pemba Sherpa, Gaurav Sapkota, Asha Lama, Ram Babu Regmi are others who have played the major roles.

The movie is produced by Sher Bahadur Tabebung, written and directed by Srijana Tabebung, the student of Kantipur Film Academy.

How many Nepali movies have depicted stories of the poor working class and their problems? One might be able to count the number on their hands. The film industry and its audience have a habit of watching movies with glitz and glam, where good looking actors dance to groovy music, travel to picturesque locations and are muddled in larger-than-life drama.

However, in 2013, director Joes Pandey took a risk and delivered a psycho-social drama based on the problems faced by the working classes.

Saanghuro is a movie about Krishna (Shushank Mainali), a newspaper seller, who lives with his mother (Aruna Karki) in squalor. Krishna marries his lover Kamala (Deeya Maskey), a domestic helper. However their economical situation forces them to share a room with his mother; what unfolds is a psycho-social drama of how human lives are affected when needs go unfulfilled.

Lousy films, empty halls and a gloomy future in store. The civil war had devastated the growth of the Nepali film industry. But in 2008, Bhusan Dahal directed film Kagbeni arrived as a breath of fresh air and completely changed the game. Based on the supernatural story, The Monkey’s Paw by WW Jacobs, the movie’s story revolves around three friends whose lives change after they receive a magical monkey’s paw from a hermit.

Setting the film in Mustang, the director transcends the glorious backdrop and engages the mysterious landscape, making the film spooky and engaging. Every actor feels perfectly casted and the musical scores complement the storyline—a rare case in the Nepali movie industry. Even if the movie was released 12 years ago, there have been few Nepali films to reach Kagbeni’s level, by delivering a minimalist screenplay with such conviction.

Kathaa, A Film by Prashant Rasaily

Making a love tragedy can be tricky because there are thousands of stories, poems, and movies written based on tragic love stories of two lovebirds. It’s just too obvious, predictable and often boring, so working with such a predictable story arc for a full feature-length movie is a difficult task. But the 2013 Nepali film Kathaa, directed by Prashant Rasaily, elevates romantic tragedy with a simple, heartfelt plot backed by powerful performances.

Kumari (played Usha Rajak) and Kancha (played by Saugat Malla) are two lovers living in a remote mountain village. While they can’t easily express their love through words, as both of them suffer speech disorder Kancha has a stammer and Kumari is mute, their love for each other is beautifully depicted. A series of unfortunate events take place, which creates trouble in their love story.

Have snacks to munch, some tissues and be ready to burst in tears while watching Kathaa.

SUNAKALI, a story of women football, where girls are used to play football above 3500m high in the Western Nepal’s Himalayan region, where girls are struggling with their parents just to play football.

Sunakali is a documentary that has represented Nepal in various international countries. This documentary film covers the story of girls struggling to play football in remote and Himalayan district, Mugu. Sunakali, produced and directed by journalist Bhojraj Bhat has been exhibited in more than 500 places in different countries.

SUNAKALI was screened as the World Premier and opening film of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF). 2014-Dec,11-15.

Journey to Yarsa | a film by Dipendra Bhandari

Dipendra Bhandari follows a family from Rolpa as they head up north to the Himalayan foothills in search of the yarsagumba, the fungus that grows out of caterpillars and is prized for its virile properties. The camera pursues the family as it joins the caravan of thousands of other yarsa hunters as they trek up the treacherous yet breathtaking mountain trails. The trip to Yarsa reveals the struggle, hope, laughter, and resilience of the people who go “dig for their fortunes” in the high Himalayan mountains every summer.

‘Journey to Yarsha’ Produced and directed by Dipendra Bhandari, shows the journey of people who went to the high Himalayan region in quest of collecting yarsagumba, a caterpillar fungus known for its purported aphrodisiac properties. The documentary garnered appreciation at national and international level and also received awards and honors in various film festivals.

The Korean Dream is about a migrant worker who sacrificed 18 years of his life in struggle to fulfill his influence in the Korean society. Likewise, the dreams of many migrant workers have ended with disappointments, the dream of main character Therefore it’s an attempt to show how human rights have been dominated and exploited under the name of government. Furthermore, it’s about broken dreams of those migrant workers that were forced to be in exile or under detention.

Ashok Thapa directorial ‘The Korean Dream’ shows the struggle of being immigrant laborers in South Korea, through Nepali labor named Minu. Moreover, it captured how the government violated human rights toward those immigrant laborers by forcefully deporting them and taking them under detention. The documentary has won several notable awards including Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival, Qatar – Jury Award, 2013, Baghdad International Film Festival, Iraq – Appreciation Award, 2013, Canada International Film Festival, Canada – Rising Award, 2014, Canada International Film Festival, Canada – Rising Award, 2014 among others.

Who Will Be a Gurkha | a film by Kesang Tseten

The Brigade of Gurkhas has been a special unit within the British army for 200 years. Boys are recruited for the unit in the mountain villages of Nepal. In Who Will Be a Gurkha, director Kesang Tseten observes how the aspiring soldiers’ physical condition, intelligence and motivation are all put to the test. Tough selection isn’t only a matter of fitness and muscle power, but also of the right mental preparation. The Gurkhas are known for their courage and fighting spirit, and they fight, in areas of conflict such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Kesang Tseten is a one of the celebrated documentary filmmakers who has introduced Nepal through his documentaries. He has directed more than a dozen documentaries depicting every facet of Nepali society. 'Who Will Be Gorkha’ is no exception where he depicts the struggle of thousands of Nepali youngsters who compete to be the part of British Army. It has screened at several national and international film festivals and also bagged numerous awards; First Prize and Audience Award at Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival.
